Dear Readers,
August arrives like a light feather coming in after a hot and dense July. August is a month of transition, a gentle pause that invites us to enjoy and finalize, but also have the fresh air of beginning anew. August is the month of beginning a new school year, new courses, new projects at work and planning ahead for the next year. But before this period starts from late to mid-August, there is an interrim period in the first half of August, a stand-still, an enjoyment of all there is and everything that was in the beautiful summer days.
In the five-element theory of Taoism and Traditional Chinese Medicine, August belongs to the Earth element: a time of transition between seasons, some days of grounding, reconnecting and recognizing the fruits of labor. In my own garden, I feel this shift deeply. The busiest days of planting, watering, and tending are now behind me. This month, I simply enjoy the beauty I’ve cultivated—wandering among blooming dahlias, gathering rosemary, mint, echinacea, yarrow, and lavender. Each plant, each petal feels like a reward for months of care and attention and a deep bond with Earth and Nature.
August reminds us that the work we’ve done—whether in our gardens or in our lives—bears fruit. It’s a time to savor what has ripened, but also a time for contemplation and planning, so we can prepare to release what does not longer serve us and walk into New Beginnings with an energy of looking forward.
May this month inspire you to enjoy the beauty you’ve created this summer, treasure the images of joy and togetherness during the hot summer months, and preparing to step into the coming season feeling nourished, steady, and ready for new beginnings.
Big hugs, Janne
